Muukalaisesta meikäläiseksi - from "them" to "us"
Six teachers and the head teacher visited The First Dimotiko Scholio Rethymnou which was originally founded for immigrant children of the time in 1795, so they have had a lot of experience even before the refugee wave of 2015, which particularly affected Greece. Therefore this school was a good destination for job shadowing.
Two of our teachers participated in ShipCon course Integrating minority, migrant &
refugee children at European schools & society in Cyprus 15.5 - 19.5.
Background of the project
The number of immigrant students in our school has grown significantly during recent years. The project originated from our school’s current need for concrete tools and measures for receiving, teaching, and integrating students with immigrant background. Due to the Europe-wide refugee situation, all European countries are in a situation where they need to think about functional and cost-effective ways to teach the country´s own language to newcomers and integrate them into society.
Our main goals of the project were
1) creating new practices for welcoming and integrating immigrants to our school and
2) increasing the awareness and competence
of teachers when it comes to working with immigrant pupils.
The plan
was that after this project our school will have clear structures, division of
work and practices when welcoming immigrant pupils and their families. These
would be based on the already existing practices of our school that we have
expanded and deepened through exchanging ideas and good practices during the
job shadowing visits as well as the course related to this theme. The class
teachers will be aware of the support available, both for them as well as the
families. All teachers will receive peer support and are able to adjust their
teaching to the language skills of the pupils. The families will have more opportunities
for networking, not only with immigrant families, but also with other pupils'
parents.
